A brief history
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was established in 1996, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey. Since its inception, the department has been offering specialized undergraduate programs in Journalism and Mass Communication, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the media landscape.

To achieve excellence in media and communication education by fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment that promotes innovation, integrity, and a balance of classroom learning and hands-on experience.
Mission
The Department of Media Studies integrates communication and journalism to offer a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional training within a supportive and flexible framework, empowering students to thrive both personally and professionally.
Key highlights of the department’s history include:
– 1996: Introduction of BA Journalism and Mass Communication as core subjects for undergraduate students.
– 2011: Launch of B.Voc (Bachelor of Vocational Studies) program in Journalism and Mass Communication.
– 2013: Introduction of Post-graduate course in 2013. St. Philomena’s College is the first under-graduate college to start this PG programme under Mysore University.
– 2015: Establishment of a state –of the art TV Studio, enhancing practical training for students.
– 2018: Setting up of a dedicated Research Centre, facilitating advanced research and academic pursuits
The Media Club run by the Department helps to hone the communication skills of the students. The students get hands on experience in reporting, editing and page make-up by working for the departmental newsletter ‘PHILO’S BULLETIN’. The annual journalistic meet ‘Aaina’ was successfully conducted. Collaborations with industry partners for internships, workshops, and guest lectures.

Graduates can take up roles such as reporter, journalist, editor, news anchor, producer, public relations specialist, advertising executive, copywriter, media planner, social media strategist, content manager, media researcher, and more.

The Journalism Department’s remarkable journey began with Dr. Sukanya, first HOD, who led the department from 1996 to 2021 with unwavering dedication. Her pioneering efforts transformed the department into a magnet for students from around the world, alongside other popular optional subjects.
Since 2023, the department has continued to thrive under the capable guidance of Dr.Yamuna B Raj and Sr.Archana Mary, who have successfully built upon the strong foundation laid by Dr.Sukanya. Their dedication ensures the department remains a hub of academic rigor and innovation.
