A Visit To Soil And Water Testing Laboratory
OBJECTIVES:
- To understand the techniques employed to test the physical and chemical parameters of soil and water
- An exposure to the commercially functioning laboratory
- An Entrepreneurial approach towards the Soil And Water Testing
As a part of departmental activity, Eight students of the Bio-Chemistry department, St.Philomena’s College(Autonomous), Mysuru under the guidance of the faculties Ms. Blessy George (HOD) and Mr. Nicholas Juje Fernandes , visited The Soil and Water Testing Laboratory in The Organization for the Development of People(ODP), an NGO which is located near Bannimantap, Mysore, to understand the different physical and chemical parameters being tested in the soil and water in agricultural industry.
The activity was prior scheduled with the help of the administration of St.Philomena’s College and the management of The Organization for the Development of People and successfully executed on 21.02.2022.
Ms. Shashi Rekha greeted and welcomed us all on behalf of the organization and briefed us about the social service activities carried out by various departments in the organization and provided us with the highlights of the statistical data of the beneficiaries through various programs that were organized. The students were very keen to understand the needs of the people, and acknowledged the importance of such NGO’s to uplift the society for the progress of nation.
The session was taken over by Mr. Jayaramu, Project Coordinator of The Soil and Water Testing Laboratory. Mr. Jayaramu explained the students, the detailed procedure and the precautions to be taken while collecting the soil and water samples. The Students keenly observed the demonstration of testing various parameters of the soil and water testing. They were given the exposure to the following instruments, its principle, procedures and applications in this field
- Conductivity Meter
- Digital Spectrophotometer
- Titration Technique
- Flame Photometer
- Ph Meter
- Rotary Shaker
After the completion of demonstration and explanation the session was open for queries and discussions, where the students got an opportunity to clarify their doubts regarding the process and they discussed the scope with an extended approach in an entrepreneur point of view.
