The students of Dept. of MA Journalism and Mass Communication of St. Philomena’s College, Mysuru visited Decccan Herald and Prajavani Newspaper priting Press in Mysuru on January 10, 2019 as part of their media visit. Students of both MA communication and B.Voc were part of the visit.

Newspaper that reaches our hands daily comes through several processes. The events happening around us metamorphoses the printed letters in front of us within short time span with great effort. The visit printing press ‘Newsline Printers, Mysore’ paved way for better understanding about the behind scenes of a newspaper.

News materials from newspaper office first go to an interior room, where they use special internet service. The page layout is rechecked and sends to the CTP machine, connected to the system, which has German laser technology. The data that got in the system is copied onto printing plates which are thin aluminium sheets. The sheet will be merged in a chemical liquid and then coated with gum. Once the coating is done, the sheet is again heated.

Printing comes in next step where the huge paper reels are unwound and placed bellowed the printing machines. These machines consist of four printing colour units namely cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Special care is given for the maintenance of pH level of ink. This printing process based on the principal of water and oil, where ink in oil state.

About 4.5-ton paper is used per day of which one-ton costs 32000 Indian Rupee. This comes from countries like Australia and Russia. Also, the number of copies of paper depends on the need. For instance, more copies are printed during elections or other such special such occasions.

Although this printing process is noisy, they are gentle on newsprint. In addition to putting ink on paper, the press also assembles the pages in correct order. All these happens quickly and around 32000 copies are printed per hour.
