71th Independence day Celebrations

Independence Day celebrated at

St. Philomena’s College

St. Philomena’s college celebrated 71st Indian Independence day at the college premises earlier this morning.
The celebrations started with flag hoisting by the Chief Guest for the day Rev. Fr. Dr. N. S Marie Joseph, Administrator of the College.

The Chief Guest in his speech expressed how happy he was to be a part of these celebrations. He said that we must be proud today, but we should always remember those who fought and died for our freedom. We may be enjoying and rejoicing, but there are soldiers out there who are guarding our country and protecting our borders from enemies, fighting terrorism and fighting enemies who try to sneak into our country. These terrorists want to create confusion among its citizens. They want to destroy the peace& unity of the country andcreate unrest between different religions.

He said, “Freedom doesn’t mean being liberated from foreign rule. Real freedom means freedom in life, freedom for poor, freedom for illiterates, freedom from corruption, freedom from harassment. He also said that we are not really free and that corruption is increasing at every level and there’s lot of harassment. Quoting Gandhiji he said, true freedom will come when a woman can walk in the dead of the night without fear. Expressing his concern over the current situations of the country he said that the government comes in the way of freedom. They want to eliminate some religions. They are going against the words of the constitution.

As part of the celebrations various cultural programs were organized at the college auditorium.

The celebrations saw the presence of Rev. Fr. Bernard PrakashBarnis, Rector, Dr. Ruth ShanthaKumari, Principal, Prof. Sanjay Nair, Vice Principal (Academic)and Rev. Fr. Sanjay Kumar, Vice Principal (Administration), St. Philomena’s College. Various teaching and non-teaching staff and students were also present.
