TWO DAYS NATIONAL LEVEL WORKSHOP
St. Philomena’s College, Mysuru, successfully hosted a two-day State Level Workshop on “Data Analysis Using SPSS” on December 14th and 15th, 2023. The event, organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Information & Communication Technology (ICT), aimed to enhance participants’ skills in data analysis. The resource person for the workshop was Prof.Lancy D’Souza, Prof.& Head, Dept. of Psychology at Maharaja’s College, University of Mysore.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Rev. Dr. Bernard Prakash Barnis, the Rector of St. Philomena’s College. Dr. Ravi JD Saldanha, the Principal, Mr. Ronald Prakash Cutinhe, Vice Principal, and Prof.Othbert Pinto, PG Director, were also present. Vimal Angeline expertly steered the program as the Master of Ceremonies.
The workshop commenced with an invocation of God through a prayer and a symbolic gesture of nurturing knowledge by watering a plant. Dr. Sunil D’Souza, in his welcome address, outlined the objectives of the program and underscored the significance of data analysis in research and decision-making. The distinguished resource person, Prof.Lancy D’Souza, provided insights into the workshop’s highlights, setting the tone for an enriching learning experience.
The workshop was divided into multiple sessions, each focusing on different aspects of data analysis using SPSS:
Session 1 (14/12/23: 11 am to 1 pm):
The first session focused on foundational aspects of research, including the identification and formulation of problems, setting objectives and hypotheses, constructing effective questionnaires, methods of data collection, and an introduction to data analysis and statistics for data analysis. Participants engaged actively, gaining insights into the initial stages of conducting meaningful research.
Session 2 (14/12/23: 1:30 pm to 4 pm):
The second session delved into hypotheses testing, a critical aspect of data analysis, and explored the intricacies of testing reliability and normality. Prof.Lancy D’Souza, the resource person, provided practical examples and case studies, fostering a deeper understanding among the participants.
Session 3 (15/12/23: 9 am to 1 pm):
The third session, conducted on the following day, began with a focus on data entry and importing into SPSS, followed by in-depth discussions and hands-on exercises on one-sample t-test, independent sample t-test, and paired t-test. Participants actively engaged in practical exercises, enhancing their skills in applying these statistical methods using SPSS.
Session 4 (15/12/23: 1:30 pm to 4 pm):
The final session covered advanced topics in data analysis, including one-way ANOVA, Chi-square tests of goodness of fit and independence, Kruskal Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon sign test, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, factor analysis, and regression. Prof.Lancy D’Souza provided valuable insights and guided participants through the application of these techniques.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory session, expressing gratitude to the resource person, Prof.Lancy D’Souza, for his valuable contributions, and acknowledging the active participation of attendees. Certificates of completion were distributed, marking the successful culmination of an enriching and informative workshop.
