Introduction
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous), Mysore, in collaboration with Bharath Cancer Hospital, Mysore, organized an awareness programme on “Oral, Breast, and Cervical Cancer” on 04th February 2025. The programme aimed to educate and sensitize the girl PG students and women faculty members about the importance of early detection, prevention, and control of these cancers. The event was a significant step toward promoting health awareness and empowering women with knowledge about life-threatening diseases.

Inauguration
The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Ronald Prakash Cutinha, Chief Librarian and Vice Principal of St. Philomena’s College. In his inaugural address, he emphasized the importance of health awareness and the role of educational institutions in promoting well-being among students and staff. He commended the efforts of IQAC and Bharath Cancer Hospital for organizing such a crucial programme.

Expert Talk by Dr. Krupa Rao

Dr. Krupa Rao, a renowned expert from Bharath Cancer Hospital, delivered an informative and engaging talk on cancer awareness. Her presentation covered the following key areas:
- Understanding Cancer: Types of cancer, with a focus on oral, breast, and cervical cancer.
- Risk Factors: Lifestyle, genetic, and environmental factors contributing to cancer.
- Early Detection: Importance of regular screenings and self-examinations.
- Prevention and Control: Healthy lifestyle choices, vaccination (e.g., HPV vaccine for cervical cancer), and avoiding risk factors like tobacco and alcohol.
- Treatment Options: Overview of modern treatment methods, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Dr. Rao’s talk was supported by a video presentation that visually demonstrated the key aspects of cancer prevention and control, making the session more impactful and easier to understand.
Screening Tests
Mr. Jagadeesh, a representative from Bharath Cancer Hospital, assisted in conducting screening tests for the participants. These tests were aimed at early detection of potential health issues and provided an opportunity for the attendees to assess their health status. The screening process was well-organized and conducted with utmost care and confidentiality.



Programme Coordination
The entire programme was compered by Dr. Deepa V., Assistant Professor, Department of BBA, and IQAC Co-Coordinator. Her seamless coordination ensured the smooth flow of the event, from the inauguration to the felicitation ceremony.

As a token of appreciation for their contributions to the programme, Dr. Krupa Rao and Mr. Jagadeesh were felicitated by the college staff:
- Dr. Krupa Rao was felicitated by Ms. Venitha Lobo (Office Superintendent), Ms. Vandana SDA, and Ms. Mary Florence Anil (Assistant Librarian).
- Mr. Jagadeesh was felicitated by Ms. Arshiya Khanum (Assistant Professor, Department of BBA), Ms. Juhie Singh (Assistant Professor, Department of BCom), and Dr. Poornima A.P. (Assistant Professor & Head, Department of Hindi).


Presence of Dignitaries
Mr. Ronald Prakash Cutinha, Vice Principal (Administration) and Mr. A. Thomas Gunaseelan, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, and IQAC Coordinator, were present throughout the programme. Their presence underscored the importance of the event and the commitment of IQAC to promoting quality initiatives in the college.
Beneficiaries
A total of 25 participants, including girl PG students and women faculty members (teaching and non-teaching), benefited from the programme. The attendees expressed their gratitude for the informative session and the opportunity to undergo screening tests.
Conclusion
Thissuccessful awareness programme on “Oral, Breast, and Cervical Cancer” not only educated the participants about the risks and prevention of these cancers but also encouraged them to take proactive steps toward their health. The collaboration between IQAC of St. Philomena’s College and Bharath Cancer Hospital, Mysore, was instrumental in making this event impactful. Such initiatives play a vital role in creating a health-conscious community and empowering women with the knowledge to safeguard their well-being.
