
Guest Lecture on “Crime Awareness” on account of “International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking”

The Department of Sociology,St. Philomena’s College, Mysuru organized . Thelecture was held on July 1st at2 PM in the College Auditorium.Mr. MaheshV, Sub-inspector of Police, District Control Room, Mysuru was the key speaker. Final year student Ms. Ridha Habbeb welcomed and introduced the guests tothe audience. Mr. Mahesh worked in Madras Infantry Regiment for 16 years, out of which 9 years were served in Jammu and Kashmir and then in Bhutan, Rajasthan, Assam, Delhi, U.P etc. After his retirement from military, he cleared sub inspector exams and started his service in Udupi, Gulbarga and form last two years, he has been serving in Mysore as sub-inspector, District control room.

Mr. Mahesh spoke on how the menace of drug abuse is crushing the young generation and it is one of the biggest challenges the society is facing. He also explainedvarious drugs used by the addicts and the effects of their usage leading to harmful effects on health, brain and genetic disorders. Mr. Mahesh spoke upon various causes of addiction specially addressed on the peer group pressures. He informed the students to be very cautious and well informed about the things happening in their surrounding and stressed on the role of the youthin tackling this problem.Mr. Mahesh highlighted the use of one nation one emergency number 112 and the use of Emergency Response Supportsystem (ERSS). He explainedthat the department has adopted thehenew technology in their investigation. He informed how ERSS helps the police to track location of the person who is in problem. He said that this new system can be availed throughout Karnataka. The system works for 24 hours and a huge staff member are working in this to ensure safety and protection to the citizens. This system provides safety to the women, child protection, fire alarm by dialing 112. He also informed that how can we track our lost mobile phones with the help of the new system of the department.

The speaker focused on the increasing incidences of cybercrimes especially how youths are trapped and cheated by the frauds like promising them to give jobs and overseas education. He also spoke on cyber bulling, phishing and to be careful, alert and not to be the victim of these crimes.He explained on the usage of Karnataka State Police app how it works and useful to the common person. This app provides the information of the nearest police station, find out the address, contact number of the in-charge officials andit also provides important notifications to the citizens. He suggested the students to down load the app and also shared his contact number in case of any emergency. Finally, he concluded that we all have to be alert and aware to protect ourselves to avoid any crime incidents before it happens.
