BSW Students Gain Extensive Practical Exposure Through Fieldwork
The Department of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous), Mysore, continues to strengthen experiential learning through active fieldwork engagement with various NGOs and social service institutions. To highlight the hands-on exposure students are receiving, the department has created and displayed a poster collage featuring photographs from fieldwork sites and activities carried out by the student social workers.
The poster showcases the students’ involvement in diverse activities such as games and recreational sessions, classroom teaching, special day celebrations, indoor activities, debates, and community-based field visits. These engagements reflect the broad spectrum of learning opportunities offered through field placements, enabling students to interact directly with beneficiaries, understand social issues at the grassroots level, and apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings.
Fieldwork is one of the most integral components of the BSW curriculum, and through these NGO partnerships, students gain exposure to sectors such as child development, health services, community development, youth empowerment, disability support, and charitable initiatives. The experiential method helps students develop professional skills including communication, teamwork, leadership, planning, empathy, and problem-solving.
The Department of BSW continues to promote learning beyond the classroom by combining theory with practical exposure, ensuring that students are well-prepared to address social challenges with skills, compassion, and professionalism.
Faculty members of the department emphasized that such field-based learning builds confidence among students and prepares them for future careers as professional social workers. The positive response and active participation of the students stand as a testament to the department’s commitment to high-quality professional training.
The BSW Department will continue to organize and promote field-based programmes to ensure that every student receives meaningful practical learning throughout the course. Through such initiatives, the department reinforces the values of social responsibility and compassion while preparing students to create lasting social impact.
