Institutional Origin and Foundation
St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous), Mysuru, affiliated with the University of Mysore, stands today as a beacon of academic excellence, character formation, and intellectual growth. Its remarkable journey began under the visionary guidance of His Excellency, the late Rt. Rev. Dr. René Feuga, the then Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mysore. Driven by a profound commitment to education and the upliftment of society, he laid the foundation for an institution that continues to enlighten and empower generations of learners.
From Bishop’s Bungalow to a Pioneering Institution
The foundation of St. Philomena’s College was laid in 1946, during a time when Mysuru was steadily emerging as a prominent centre of education. In its early phase, the college commenced its functioning in the Bishop’s Bungalow, which served as the first centre of learning. This humble yet meaningful beginning reflected the Bishop’s unwavering determination to build a space where knowledge would flourish and contribute to the welfare of society.
The motto “Caritas in Scientia” — Service through Knowledge — soon became the guiding light of the institution, embodying both its academic mission and its commitment to social responsibility.
Understanding the growing demand for a dedicated educational campus, Bishop René Feuga received exceptional support from the esteemed Mysore Wodeyar dynasty. Their generosity and cooperation enabled the construction of the Main Block — an architectural landmark that continues to symbolize the college’s heritage and strength. This iconic structure marked a transformative milestone in the institution’s journey toward academic excellence and societal contribution.
The Historic Main Block

Designed with well-structured classrooms and wide, spacious corridors, it fostered an atmosphere ideal for learning, reflection, and academic exploration. Even today, this landmark structure stands proudly at the centre of the campus, retaining the name “Main Block” in honor of its historical importance and enduring legacy.
A Legacy of Excellence
St. Philomena’s College holds the honour of being the first private Science Degree College in the erstwhile Mysore State—an achievement that highlights its pioneering contribution to higher education. Over the decades, the institution has reached remarkable milestones across academics, cultural excellence, and sports, proudly culminating in the celebration of its Oak Jubilee. Its enduring legacy stands as a powerful testament to its steadfast commitment to quality education and to shaping both the intellectual and moral character of society.
