The Women’s Cell and “Redressal of Atrocities against Women Cell”of St. Philomena’s College jointly organized a session on “Women Harassment and its Legal Consequence” for the UG and PG students. The resource person for the session was Professor K.S. Suresh Chief Executive (former Principal) of JSS Law College, Mysore. The event was organized on 18th November 2023 at 12.00 PM in the Indoor Stadiumof the college. More than 200 students and faculty members had the opportunity to attend and took the benefit of the awareness program.
Dr Suresh stimulated young listeners with the need to understand women’s rights and its violation resulting in consequences. He gave real time examples and understanding of what constitutes to sexual harassment.Sexual suggestive remarks, offensive comments, jokes, displaying offensive pictures, posters, SMS, WhatsApp Intimidation, threats, blackmail, etc. are some very punishable acts. He shared statics on reporting of sexual harassment and said that staggering 91 percent of the victims did not report for the fear of being judged by the society.
He was of the opinion that the potential offenders should not to get involved with any mischief as its consequence could cost their future prospects. He also advised the girl students to be brave and report such incidents to concerned authorities without any hesitation and fear.
Students took active participation and posed few questions which were very well answered by the speaker.
The session was hosted by Dr. Vagdevi H.S P.G. Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and also one of the committee members of Redressal of Atrocities against Women Cell. Dr. Asha, HoD P.G Dept. of Chemestry and also a member of Women’s Cell introduced Prof. Suresh, the speaker of the session. Principal Dr. Ravi J.D Saldanha, Dr. Reena Francis, the coordinator of Redressal of Atrocities against Women Cell, Ms. Juhie Singh P. coordinator for Women’s Cell and other faculty members were present.
