Women’s Cell Hosts Educational Session on Cervical Cancer at St. Philomena’s College
The Women’s Cell of St. Philomena’s College (Autonomous), Mysore, conducted an awareness program titled “Women’s Health – Get Informed on Cervical Cancer” on March 7th, 2025, at 2:30 PM in the college indoor stadium. The event focused on educating women about cervical and breast cancer, preventive measures, and the importance of maintaining overall health.

The event commenced with an invocation song by Sweedal and her team, followed by a welcome speech by Ms. Juhie Singh, Coordinator of the Women’s Cell and Assistant Professor in the Commerce Department. The highlight of the event was a video prepared by the Journalism and Mass Communication Department, which showcased the importance of Women’s Day and women’s contributions.
The session was presided over by Rev. Dr. Lourdu Prasad Joseph, Rector of the college, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the college’s commitment to gender equality and the pivotal role women play in society. He highlighted the fact that women constitute 85% of the college’s staff and 65% of the student population, reflecting the institution’s inclusive environment. Father shared a heartfelt anecdote about his 99- year-old mother, emphasizing the role of women as nurturers and caregivers. He credited her prayers and strength as the foundation of his own journey.
Dr. Bhavana R, the chief guest, captivated the audience with her informative session. She elaborated on the causes, symptoms, and risk factors of cervical cancer, including smoking, multiple sexual partners, and weak immunity. She stressed the importance of vaccinations for girls aged 9-16, regular Pap tests starting at 21, and a balanced diet rich in cancer-preventive foods like turmeric, flaxseeds, tomatoes, and cruciferous vegetables.
The session also covered breast cancer, detailing its symptoms, risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment. Dr. Bhavana’s emphasis on early detection and prevention resonated with the audience. The interactive Q&A session allowed students to seek further clarity on women’s health issues.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks, and the chief guest was felicitated by Ms. Juhie Singh, faculty members, and student representatives. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, staff, and dignitaries, making it a memorable and impactful initiative by the Women’s Cell.
