OBJECTIVES OF THE SPECIAL LECTURE
- To create awareness about diverse career opportunities available for students of Economics in various sectors.
- To provide guidance on preparation strategies for competitive examinations at Karnataka and Central Government levels.
- To enhance students’ understanding of skill requirements such as data analysis, research, and policy interpretation.
motivate students to pursue higher education and professional growth in the field of Economics. The programme aimed to provide valuable insights into the diverse career paths available in the field of economics and to guide students in making informed professional choices.


The session was presided by Dr. Kempe Gowda G N, Assistant Professor of Economics, Department of Studies in Economics, Government First Grade College for Women, Byrapura, T. Narasipura, who served as the resource person. The programme commenced with a formal inauguration in the presence of the PG Coordinators Dr. Noor Mubasheer C A. Dr. Nandeesh H K, Head of the Department, PG Department of Economics, and Ms. Namitha Jois K S, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Economics, were also present in the event. Students of UG and PG Economics, MSc Computer Science and MSW open Elective Students actively participated in the event.
In his address, Dr. Kempe Gowda G N provided an in-depth overview of the vast and evolving career opportunities available to students of Economics. He explained that economics is not limited to teaching or traditional roles, but extends to diverse sectors such as banking, finance, data analytics, public policy, international trade, development organizations, and corporate consulting. He stressed that with the growing importance of data-driven decision-making, economists are increasingly in demand in both public and private sectors.

The speaker highlighted key career paths such as roles in RBI, SEBI, NABARD, commercial banks, economic consulting firms, NITI Aayog, and international organizations like the World Bank and IMF. He emphasized the importance of acquiring practical skills such as statistical analysis (using software like SPSS, R, and Excel), report writing, and critical thinking to remain competitive in the job market. He also encouraged students to consider higher education options such as MA, MSc, PhD in Economics, and specialized courses in econometrics, financial economics, and development studies.

A significant part of his speech focused on competitive examinations at both the Karnataka State and Central Government levels. At the Karnataka level, he discussed opportunities through KPSC (Karnataka Public Service Commission), FDA/SDA exams, PDO (Panchayat Development Officer), and recruitment in state finance and planning departments. He explained how economics graduates have an advantage in understanding public finance, budgeting, and development policies, which are crucial for these roles.

At the Central Government level, he elaborated on exams conducted by UPSC, including Civil Services Examination (IAS, IPS, IFS), Indian Economic Service (IES), and other recruitment exams like SSC, RBI Grade B, NABARD Grade A/B, and banking exams. He provided guidance on preparation strategies, emphasizing conceptual clarity in subjects like microeconomics, macroeconomics, Indian economy, and current affairs. He advised students to develop a habit of reading newspapers, economic surveys, and budget documents regularly.
Dr. Kempe Gowda G N also motivated students by sharing practical tips such as time management, consistent study plans, and the importance of perseverance in competitive exam preparation. He encouraged students to start early, remain disciplined, and make use of online resources, coaching, and peer discussions.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion, where students actively engaged with the speaker, clarifying doubts regarding career paths and exam preparation strategies. The talk was highly insightful and inspired students to explore diverse opportunities in the field of economics with confidence and clarity.
