The Department of Sociology organized a field Trip to Pratham model villages of Hyknur andSujjaluru of TNarsipura Taluka. Pratham an NGO working to provide quality primary education to the underprivileged children. Pratham’s declared mission is “Every child in school and learning well” and its primary focus is children’s education and is currently working in 182 villages of Mysore, T Narasipura, Chamarajnagar and NanjangudTaluks.

The department had organized a special lecture on the topic “The Status of Education in Rural Karnataka” on 22nd Dec 2021. The guest speaker Mr. MurgeshPremkumar, Coordination and Documentation, Pratham, Mysore presented about the scenario of rural education and explained the role of Pratham organization which is trying to bridge the gap, creating awareness among women, setting up community and digital library in the rural areas. The main task of the organization is to train the women who can be the best teacher and mentor to their children. Majority of the students expressed their view to visit the model villages adopted by Pratham and experience it practically. After several follow ups and coordination,the department arranged the field visit to two model villages of Pratham on 7th March, 2022. Before the visit the coordinator of Pratham MrMurgeshPremkumar suggested to prepare our students to plan activities whereby they can interact with the community and the children, and a more hands-on approach for learning about the programs. The students were divided into three groups and they were informed to plan different activities for the children. On March 7, the whole team of students headed by Dr Sowmya P and accompanied with Mr. Murugeshstarted traveling towards the model villages. The main purpose was to expose the students to understand the reality beyond the walls of our classroom. The team reached the first model villagearound 11 am. The coordinator explained about the complete action plan of the day.

One group was dropped in Sujjaluru and other two groups in Hykanuru. Initially students interacted with the teachers of Pratham and they accompanied us throughout the day in showing how the programme works in coordination with the government schools. The students spoke with the government teachers and observed how the model works actively. The study tour also included visit to Anganwadi center where the students interacted with the little kids, involved in their activities and sang the rhymes together with the children. The community whole heartedly welcomed us and the students interacted with thevillagers. The students observed the classes taken by the Pratham thathow the teachersadapt different modules and creative methods to make the subject very easy for the children. Overall, the students observed the innovative learning space and the systematic approach of Pratham’s coordination in the school. The students enjoyed the food of the midday meals and were over joyed to accompany the children during lunch. In the afternoon the students with their group members went to the classes and conducted various activities like quiz, drawing and games. The children enthusiastically involved in all the activities and enjoyed each other’s company. The winners were given a token of appreciation. The studentsperformed cultural dances and a drama was played, the audience enjoyed very much and even the school children performed dance and songs which made the whole programme colorful. The children mingled with the group so well that they wanted us to stay back for some more time. Later the students spoke to the children how effectively they are learning and is beneficial in their studies. Later the two groups were addressed by the coordinator and explained about the internship. The students shared their experience of the visit and felt that the whole day was very fruitful where they thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company. One important change what the students felt was that most of them did not use their mobile phones for the whole day as they were completely engaged in the activity; this was really an amazing outcome of the day. Overall, the field trip fetched fruitful results, the students returned back with full satisfaction of their day.
E shram card Awareness programme to the Out Reach Workers of Ananda Jyothi Network
The department of Sociology organized an E Shrama card awareness programme to the outreach workers of the Ananda Jyothi Network on ———–at 12.00 pm. Ananda Jyothi Network , an organization of HIV positive people working for the welfare of its community members. Dr Sowmya P and Mrs. RashmiVincia along with few students visited the center and interacted with the outreach workers. Firstly the team was heartily welcomed by the Anandajyothi counselor—–
Dr Sowmya P addressed the members and explained about E-Shram card.This is an innovative programme launched by the central government under Ministry of Labour and Employment. E-Shram cards for the poor of the country come as a big scheme to provide assistance to the labor class. Unorganized sector workers can get the financial help in any corner of the country by registering for E- shram card. She gave the details that people who working in unorganized sectors in the age group of 18- 60 are eligible for the scheme. She expressed that there is wider chances to include many other new policies, create more jobs in future and launch new schemes for the under this programme. The speaker stressed on the need and importance of registering under this programme. She explained the details of nearly 154 different works like mason, street vendors, petty business, tailors and son on been recognized to register to E- Shram and also throwed light on the criteria’s to enroll. Later the queries of the outreach workers were clarified and all their doubts were cleared by the faculty members. Dr Sowmya addressed the outreach workers to collect the essential information of those who are working in Unorganized sectors and also endured that once their details is collected and submitted to us the department will take the responsibility to co-ordinate with the concerned authorities and avail them the card. The outreach workers agreed to collect the details of the beneficiaries at the earliest and inform us. The programme concluded with a vote of Thanks by the peer counselor Ms. Mahadevamma of Anada Jyothi Network, she ensured to provide the details of the target group and appreciated for the interest and concern the institution and the department has taken. Over this entire programme was very fruitful and had a positive output and created an opportunity to serve the community.
