Professional Enrichment Program-Report

In the workshop organized by St.Philomena’s college in collaboration with IQSC has organized two days workshop on Professional Enrichment Program for the faculties of the college on June 1 and June 2, 2018 at college auditorium.
He added, education is a process of man making where professional are governed by codes of ethics, integrity and morality. Emphasized on research and its importance in the teaching profession where teaching should become the byproduct of research.
Teaching is the profession which always scope for change and growth which helps the teachers in learning and also to provide quality education to their students, he added
Prof.Venkatesha also briefed the faculties on profession, professionalism, professional development on his key note address.
Profession that constantly evolving is teaching profession and as a teachers we should always be open for learning and growing, said Rev Fr Dr. Bernard Prakash Barnis, Rector/manager, St.Philomena’s college.

Session 1
Time: 11.30 to 1.00 pm
Topic: Role of teachers in holistic development of Students (Brain Storming)
Resource Person: Prof. C.G.Venkatesh Murthy, Dean- Research, Regional Institute of Education, Mysore.
The teachers should first develop the vision, mission and goal of the Institution so that it would help in development of the college as well as the students.
As a teacher we should concentrate more on the learning, speaking, reading and writing skills of our students.
A teacher is not the one who just complete his / her subject but they should concentrate on the development of communication skills, leadership quality, personality development and skill development of the students.
It was a brain storming session where it was an open session for participants to put up their opinion on few questions which speaker asked like:
What are your explicitly doing to fulfil these goals? And he suggested teachers to take up this task if they are not practicing and to remember that not all children learn the same and each individual differ.
All together the participants gave 72 suggestions where he suggested the IQAC to put up all the suggestions and work on it, and explained how teachers can play an important role in the searching the high level through ZPD method and he stressed on telling teachers to be comfortable first then they can help the students to achieve their goal.
Session was for discussion and interaction, participants clarified their doubt.
Session 2
Time: 2.00 to 3.30 pm

In this session, speaker explained on vision aspects of teaching, learning and evaluation method.
He explained teaching is an act of giving/passing on information where learning is an act of receiving information.
To construct information in to knowledge the teaching should be an act of facilitating learning and learning will be an act of constructing knowledge.
He also briefed teachers that if their teaching does not develop their personality, attitude and unable to take decision then you have just merely passed information but to do this they don’t need a teacher and classroom they get information through internet so as a teachers we should more concentrate on how we are moulding our students for tomorrow.
As a teacher our learning process should be always continuous and we should restructure knowledge based on our experience. We should always Construct, De-Construct and Reconstruct our knowledge which helps us in continuous learning process.
Speakers asked participants many questions where he didn’t wanted them to answer it, he just wanted them to think and question themselves as a teacher what are we doing and are we doing what we are telling the students. He also requested them to never stop thinking and questioning yourselves that process helps us in growing.

Session 3

Topic: Assessment process and possibilities in CBCS context in Higher Education Institutions.

Panel Discussion on:
- Basic aspiration of CBCS are – Continuous and comprehensive evaluation, flexibility for students to choose their paper and students centric curriculum.
- Challenges/anxiety for teachers to understand CBCS:
- It’s a credit based system and not marks based system teachers should understand dis first.
- When it comes to CBCS pattern of evaluation each semester has 16 weeks, 8th week will be C1, 15th week C2 and C3 is the final and end semester Exam.
- In CBCS the teachers who teaches is the best person to access the students.
- Guidelines for Inputs:whatever method you teach, fist teacher should be confident / aware of the topic and comfortable on the topic.
As a teacher you should enjoy the topic when you don’t then you can’t expect better answer from the students.
Techers should concentrate on Average and below Average students and should have transparency and commitment.
When it comes to evaluation first discuss in the department then it should be known to students on what kind of evaluation method they got through.

Session 4
Time: 8.30 to 10am
Topic: Stream/department group Discussion
Stream wise all the departments were divided into 3 groups Arts & Languages/ Science/ Commerce & Management.
All the groups came up with the roadmap for assessments and evaluation under departmental level and also for the professional development for the teachers.
Each group came up with their own ideas and innovative method of evaluation and discussed with each other and handed over their method list to the IQSC so that the management can take those methods for further development.
Session 5
Time:10.00 to 11.30 am
Topic: Facilitating quality Assurance among college teachers.
Resource Person: Prof. C.G.Venkatesh Murthy, Dean, Research, RIE, Mysore
Prof. Venkatesh Murthy explained about what is quality where he told constantly pursuing excellence making sure that what your organization does it fit for the purpose and not only stay that way, but keeps on improving, helps in managing the quality.
He also explained on quality control which is a process by which entities review the quality of all factors involved in production which was continued by quality assurance which helps in preventing the mistakes or defect which assures quality for itself.
He also explained the principles of quality assurance principles that is, fit for purpose ans correct the mistakes in the first time.
He also mentioned on the challenges of quality assurance they are:
- Presage factor
- Context factor
- Process factor
- Product factor
In the session speaker explained about the IQSC and its function ad what are the professional responsibilities of an educational leader.
A teacher is a professional, educational leader, adviser, colleague, well-wisher and role model and a principal/teacher of a college can assure quality in his/her college.
The session was open for discussion.

Teaching profession is the profession which has major impact on the younger generation so faculty enrichment programs like this helps in the professional growth of the teachers and also acts like an instructor for all of us to know where we stand and which all the area’s that we need to improve for the professional growth said, Dr. Ruth Shantha Kumari, Principal in her valedictory remarks, feedback of all the session were taken by the participants.
