GRADUATION DAY
St. Philomena’s College, an autonomous institute, held its graduation ceremony for the academic year 2023-24 on May 18, 2024, at the college’s indoor stadium. The event celebrated the academic achievements of 525 graduate and 199 postgraduate students who received their degree certificates. Additionally, 25 students were awarded scholarships for their excellence in various disciplines and languages.
Programme Details
Graduation Robes Distribution
Graduation robes were distributed to all graduates prior to the ceremony. The distribution process was carefully organized to ensure that each student received the correct robe, which was an essential part of the formal attire for the ceremony. Faculty members and volunteers assisted in the process to make it smooth and efficient.
Assembly of the Students
Students assembled at the designated areas well before the ceremony commenced. The Philomena’s anthem, performed by the students of St. Philomena’s College, officially marked the start of the ceremony. Invocation of God’s Blessings
The ceremonial lighting of the lamp was guided by the rector, invoking divine blessings.Mr. Joel and his team from the Department of Christianity led the invocation, creating an atmosphere of reverence and solemnity. This segment of the ceremony highlighted the spiritual foundation and the importance of divine guidance in the graduates’ future endeavours.
Welcome Address
Dr. Ravi J.D. Saldanha, Principal of St. Philomena’s College, delivered the welcome speech. He acknowledged the achievements of the graduates, set a celebratory tone for the event, and expressed the college’s pride in their accomplishments. His address underscored the significance of the occasion and extended a warm welcome to all attendees.

Introducing the Chief Guest
Mr. Mathew, Assistant Professor, Department of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), introduced the esteemed chief guest, Prof. Dr. D. Anand. He highlighted Dr.Anand’s significant contributions to education and his achievements, setting the stage for his address. The introduction emphasized the honor of having Dr.Anand as the chief guest.
Address by the Chief Guest
Prof. Dr. D. Anand, Director of the College Development Council at the University of Mysore, delivered the keynote address. He emphasized the broader purpose of education beyond earning a degree, stressing that education should build character and capabilities. He highlighted the importance of self-love, the college’s motto of spreading education through love, and the responsibility of students to make their communities inclusive and livable. Dr.Anand also spoke about the necessity of inheriting will, vision, and commitment for professional success and stressed the urgent need to instill a spirit of global citizenship in young people.

Administering the Oath by Rector
Rev. Dr. Bernard PrakashBarnis, Rector, administered the oath to the graduates. This oath-taking ceremony symbolized the graduates’ commitment to uphold the values and ethics they have learned during their time at the college. It was a solemn and meaningful part of the ceremony, reinforcing the responsibilities that come with their new status as graduates.
Passing Over the Lamp of Wisdom
The symbolic passing of the Lamp of Wisdom signified the transfer of knowledge and enlightenment from the graduating class to their juniors. Graduates handed the lamp to their juniors, symbolizing the on-going legacy of wisdom and the responsibility to continue seeking knowledge.
Distribution of the Scholarships
Ms. Lydia Vandana, Controller of Examinations, conducted the distribution of scholarships. This part of the ceremony celebrated the academic achievements of 25 students who excelled in various disciplines and languages. The scholarships were a recognition of their hard work, dedication, and exceptional performance.
Vote of Thanks
Mr. William Joseph, HoD, UG Dept. of English, extended the vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of everyone who made the day possible. He expressed gratitude to the chief guest, special guests, faculty, staff, students, and all attendees for their participation and support. The vote of thanks marked the formal conclusion of the ceremony.
National Anthem
The ceremony concluded with the National Anthem, followed by the return of robes and a community meal. The National Anthem was a moment of patriotism and unity, bringing the ceremony to a dignified close.
Returning the Robes
Graduates were reminded to return their robes to the designated faculty before 1 pm. This process was organized to ensure the efficient collection of the robes, allowing the smooth transition from the ceremony to the community meal.
Community Meals
A sumptuous spread was arranged for all attendees to enjoy. The community meal provided an opportunity for graduates, faculty, and guests to mingle and celebrate the accomplishments of the day in a relaxed and joyous setting.
