
Report on Experiential Learning Activity
The Department of Sociology organised an Experiential Learning Activity to Jyoti Social Welfare Society an NGO located in Bannur road, Nadanahalli, Mysuru on June 9th 2023 at 10.30 am.
Objective of the visit:
The understand the role of NGO in tackling the social problems
To know the different strategies involved in women empowerment through SHGs
About the NGO: Jyothi Social welfare Society (Society of Ursine sisters of Somasca) is anon-Governmentalorganisation functioning from past 20 years in the rural areas of Mysore district of Karnataka State. The Social Welfare centre of the congregation began its activities in the year 1986 with small class of drop outs and working children in nearby villages and as the year passed, they have extended their activities to cater the needs of under privileged children and women living in rural areas.
The main mission of this society is to work towards protection and empowerment of women and girls in all spheres of public and private life so that they realise their full potential in a just and unbiased society.
Experience of the visit:Second Year BA students along with faculties was warmly greeted by sr Shanti who is in charge of the NGO. our students began the programme with invoking god’s blessing on all our endeavours.




Sr. Shanti elaborated us on the mission and the dream of the foundersto build a fair and just society. She threw light on the various functions and tasks taken by the team members in reaching the mission of the organisation.
She presented on the various activities undertaken by the centre especially formation of SHGs in working areas. They are provided credit programmes saving habits in inculcated resulting in incomegeneration this activity has ledthem to sustainable life style. Sr Shanti explained on different vocational and training programmes given from the organisation for their sustainable growth. She also explained about the special classes and camps are organised for children to improve their personality. The centre is facilitating the education for the nearby villages and it also runs a hostel for girl children who are from the lower economic background and are orphans.

Over all the main goal of this centre is to make change to develop village areas by helping women and children and make changes in their life to have a better life.
Outcome of the visit:
The students could analyse the problems of women and children in rural areas.
The various measures involved in women empowerment.
