
Special lecture on the topic “Cyber crime and its effect on society”

The special guest lecture on the topic “Cyber crime and its effect on society” was jointly organized by the Department of Sociology and Department of Criminology and Forensic science on 10th December 2019 in the Chapel Hall. The programme started at 10:30 AM by welcoming the guest by the final year student of Criminology and Forensic Science – Aika Ahmed and introduced the guest to the audience. A renowned criminologist Dr. Aravind G B, Professor, Dept. of Forensic science, JSS Medical College, Mysore was the guest speaker who holds the doctoral degree in the field of Cyber Forensics. The programme was anchored by second year student – Schwann S Akanksh. The lecture was preceded by Principal Dr. Ruth shanthakumari, who threw little light on the topic.
The first few minutes of the lecture was focused on the origin of the term, types of cybercrimes and he stressed on the reasons for cyber crimes and its effect on the society. The speaker explained that maximum cyber crime effect the individual especially the youth. The speaker through the datas explained that how steadily the cyber crime is increasing and different levels of investigating it. The resource person by narrating some of the case studies explained how cyber crime is a threat to the social order, national security and violating human right.
The speaker highlighted about the cyber laws and stressed the precaution measures to be taken by students to protect themselves as victims of cyber crime.

Through the seminar it was understood that a crime committed by using the electronic device do fall under the umbrella of cybercrime. The nature of cybercrime and the profiling of a cybercriminal were also discussed in the talk.
The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks given by second year student – Schwann S Akanksh.

The students were able to understand about the incidences of cyber crime and how adversely it is
Affecting the society. They were able to understand different types of cyber crimes and how it is
threatening individuals, economy and national security also. The case studied discussed gave
more information and awareness to the students. The students understood about the precautions
to be taken in order to protect themselves from cyber crimes. Overall the special lecture
highlighted various dimensions of cyber crime.
