The World Environment Day will be celebrated on June 5, 2023.
The Department of Environmental Studies conducted an extension activity on 5th June 2023 on the “World Environment Day “ at GHPS School, Geetha Mandira Road, Ashoka Road, Mysore – 570007.
The Extension activity was conducted by planting saplings bought from the Forest Department Unit at Paduvarahali, Vinayakanagara, Mysore – 57006. About 30 saplings of various flowering plants like Tabebuia rosea, Tabebuia pallida, Magnolia champaca, Syzygium cumini Millingtonia hortensis, were provided by the forest department.
The program was formally inaugurated at St. Philomena’s College campus by Rev. Fr. Dr.Bernard Prakash Barnis. He spoke on the importance of increasing vegetation, and appreciated the department for conducting such a fruitful extension activity. The Principal Dr. Ravi J. D. Saldanha briefed on the importance of the day and encouraged the students to have more such activities in the future.
Prof. Uzma Bathool, HoD, Dept. Of Environmental Studies, Prof. Mary P. Kurein, Prof. Milagries A., Prof. Alex and two gardeners along with a batch of 30 student volunteers selected from various streams viz BCA,BBA,B.Com, BATHM participated in the program.
The staff and students left the campus at around 1.45 pm using college transportation and gathered at GHPS School, Geetha Mandira Road, Ashoka Road, Mysore – 570007.
The staff and students planted saplings of various flowering plants of Tabebuia rosea, Tabebuia pallida, Magnolia champaca, Syzygium cumini Millingtonia hortensis etc. into previously made pits.
The venue was selected as it is a government school with sufficient space, and willingness of the school staff to nurture the plants . Hence this was an ideal spot where the follow up could happen. There are gardeners employed in the school to take care of the plants.
After planting of saplings, the students of SPC and the Government school were enlightened by the staff members about safeguarding the planet by making it greener and how to keep our surroundings clean and beautiful, the little children in the school were happy to do this activity along with the degree students.
Mr. Ravish, the Head Master of the school was happy that we all have gathered there to celebrate World Environment Day. He was thankful for selecting their school and bringing in so many varieties of plants. Mr. Vishwanath Murthy, Assistant teacher was instrumental in getting this activity done in their campus.
Prof Uzma spoke on the importance of developing care and love towards nature by every single individual. She also spoke on how important it is for the youth to care about the nature.
The activity was concluded by Prof. Uzma Bathool by thanking the management, staff and the students for actively participating and making this program a successful one.
