
Workshop on the Art of Bonsai Making and Successful Hydroponics Farming
A meeting was held and decided that it is necessary to provide an opportunity for our students to enrich themselves with the recent trends and technologies in the field of Agriculture. In order to promote and encourage students to become entrepreneurs, the faculty members decided to organize a one day workshop on “The Art of Bonsai making and successful Hydroponic farming”. The workshop was
restricted to our own students focusing on the recent advancements.

The workshop was formally inaugurated by the dignitaries on the dias Dr. Ruth Shanthakumari, Principal, Rev. Fr. Roxan Thomas Baros, Campus administrator, Dr. Alphonsus D’Souza, Controller of Examination, Mrs. Anitha. S, Resource person and the industrialist Mysuru, and Ms. Dorothy P, HOD of department of Botany and Convenor of the programme watered the plant with an invocation song seeking the blessing of the almighty.
The programme was anchored by Arjun final year CBZ student he welcomed the speakers for the following sessions.
Mrs. Jeevitha Saldanha, Asst. Prof. in Botany welcomed the gathering with a brief explaination about the seminar, and overall introductory remarks of the program were delivered by Dr. Ruth Shanthakumari while addressing the gathering she encouraged the participants to learn the skills and know the recent trends and technologies in plant science and to become entrepreneurs.
First session: Glimpse on the concept of Bonsai
The first session was started immediately at 10:45 a.m. the Speaker of the session Mrs. Anitha. S. was introduced by Ms. Preethi Pereira, Asst. Prof in Botany. Firstly the speaker focused on the nature’s laws and principles along with glorifying the aesthetic beauty. She started the seminar with the history of bonsai and the type of plant to be selected to make a bonsai and also emphasized the role and effect of environment and edaphic factors on the growth of plant, then she started describing the techniques used in Bonsai making using micro slides presentation and showed the bonsai plant varieties the different shapes and the names if each shape was explained. The seminar was further continued with the showcasing of the bonsai which was done by Mrs. Anitha herself . The materials used in the skills their usage was explained in a detailed manner.
Session II: Demonstartion of Bonsai
The demonstration of bonsai was done with the explanation of the selection of the type of pot, the plants to be selected and the tools required for shaping the bonsai. She explained the media mixture suitable for the growth of bonsai plant and then continued with the techniques like Pruning and Wiring the plants to give the desired shape. She practically demonstrated the making of bonsai using one normally grown potted plant, after pruning and wiring of the selected plant she shifted to a small pot. The session was very interactive and few of the Participants pruned and wired-out another one potted plant and gave the shape.
Session III: Landscape on a tray.
The third session was chaired by the same speaker Mrs. Anitha. S. on the next topic landscaping, she acquainted the audience about the importance of landscape gardening during this rapid urbanization then she demonstrated the landscape on a tray using sand, Aralia plants, Porous rocks, gravels, white granite powder, and some grasses. The whole one hour was very interested and the participants impressed and enjoyed her sessions.
Session III: Hydroponic farming.
The third session was resumed at 2:00 p.m. by Mr. Waseem Pasha, Asst. Prof. in Botany, who introduced the post lunch speaker Mr. Sumukh. S.who is the founder and CEO of Microfarm. Mysuru. Speaker spoke about the cultivation of commercial crops using the soilless farming called Hydroponics, he explained the basic Macro and micro-nutrients need for the plants in absence of soil. He also discussed about the purpose, opportunities, challenges and profits from the Hydroponic farming. The participants very highly impressed by the knowledge of resource person

- Students were informed about recent trends, few students and staff members were given the opportunity to wire the plant selected for Bonsai and the skills were taught by the expert.

They felt that hydroponics could have been better understood with a demonstration of the technique.
