Report On Extension Activity of Department of Environmental Studies
The Department of Environmental Studies conducted an extension
activity on 18th July 2022 based on the theme of “World Environment Day
2022 “ of “Only One Earth” with the focus on “Living Sustainably in
Harmony with Nature” by adopting the concept of “Environment and
Sustainable Development” .
The Extension activity was conducted by planting saplings at St. John Paul
Nagara, Nagunahalli Road, Old Kesare, Mysore-570003. The saplings were
obtained from Forest Department Unit at Paduvarahali, Vinayakanagara,
Mysore – 57006. About 30 saplings of various flowering plants were
provided by the forest department.
The program was formally inaugurated at St. Philomena’s College campus
by the Principal Dr. Ravi J. D. Saldanha. He exhorted the conduct of this
activity and encouraged the students to be more proactive towards
sustainable development.
Prof. Uzma Bathool, HoD, Dept. Of Environmental Studies, Prof. Mary P.
Kurein, Prof. Milagries A., Dr. Prashanth D. A. , Rev. Fr. John Paul,
Campus administrator, Rev. Fr. Christopher, Brother Dolphi and two
gardeners along with a batch of 30 student volunteers selected from
various streams participated.
The team of staff and students left the campus and gathered at St. John
Paul Nagara, prior to this the pits were dug and kept ready.
The staff and students planted 30 saplings of various flowering plants of
Bauhinia purpurea, Family – Fabaceae , Tabebuia ,Family Bignoniaceae etc.
The purpose of selecting the venue was not just to plant, but , to sustain
the plants ,as this was an ideal spot where the follow up could happen.
There are gardeners employed who will cater to the needs, by taking care
of plants. A special word of thanks to Dr. Rev. Fr. Bernard Prakash Barnis,
Rector, St. Philomena’s Institutions for allowing us to conduct extension
activity at his Parish and to assure that the plants will be taken care.
After planting of saplings, the students were enlightened by the staff
members about safeguarding the planet by making it greener and how to
conscientise the students regarding sustainable development.
Prof Mary P. Kurien spoke on the importance of developing care and love
towards nature by every single individual. She also spoke on how
important it is for the youth to care about the nature. She applauded the
students for actively participating with much enthusiasm.
Rev. Fr. Christopher spoke on the importance of planting and what role the
plants played in our lives. Fr. John Paul advised the students to nurture the
nature, so that the nature will nurture us. Dr. Prashanth D.A., advised the
students to take up more such activities in the future as well. The activity
was concluded by Prof. Uzma Bathool by thanking the management, staff
and the students for actively participating and making this program a
successful one.
