Introduction
Session on “Awareness of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM)” was conducted as a means to educate students about Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM). The session also elaborated on the career prospects and growth for students of different disciplines after the GATE and JAM examination.

- To bring awareness on Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM)
- To clear any previously held misconceptions about the validity and scope after the exams

Session on Awareness of GATE and JAM exams was conducted as a means to educate students about Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM). The speakers for the session were Mr Naveen Shankar and Mr Anurag Sharma, PhD scholars from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Mr Naveen, is a PhD scholar in the division of biological sciences. He has been part of innumerous research projects and has also worked hard in educating students about the different aspects of plant development biology. Mr Anurag, is also a PhD scholar in the division of biological sciences. Along with being ranked 33rd in the JOINT CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) June 2018, he has worked to sensitize and create awareness among individuals in and around Bengaluru on the natural environment. Dr. Ravi JD Saldanha, principal of St. Philomena’s College was also present for the session. The session took place in the Chapel Hall within the campus premises. The session started at 2:30 pm and ended at 3:30 pm. The session also elaborated on the career prospects and growth for students of different disciplines after the GATE and JAM examination.
Both speakers were introduced to the audience, following which they took over the session for the main agenda. Students of BSc and MSc were invited to attend the session and 36 students of different streams took part. Mr Naveen started the session with the introduction to Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). He explained the structure of the exam, the subject choice each student has and all the intricate details of the examination. After which, Mr Anurag took over to explain the Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM), the structure of the exam, subject choice and details of the examination. The session then moved forward to explain why the exam can be a step forward in the area of research and how there are misconceptions with regard to the examinations. It was also clarified that GATE and JAM are open to all streams of education and can be very useful for many future research aspirants to receive scholarships and conduct research. The session then opened up to questions regarding the exams and the processes to attempt the examination.
The goal of the session was to bring awareness to students. A common misconception about the two examinations is that they are only for Engineering students which is not the case. The speakers wanted to also give a peek into their own lives and how writing the exam gave them a chance to work with better opportunities in their respective fields. The session was a great opportunity for students starting out their careers in academia.
